The Secret to the Perfect Fit: Leggings, Bras & Shorts That Actually Stay Put!

Let’s be honest — we’ve all sewn something cute that almost fits. The leggings that look killer until you sit down. The bra that’s fine until you actually move. The shorts that try to make a getaway mid-run. 🙃

But don’t panic! Perfect fit isn’t about luck or magic — it’s about a few small adjustments that make a huge difference. Once you learn how to tweak your patterns for your body, you’ll wonder how you ever settled for store-bought.

1. Start with Your Measurements (Yes, Right Now)

We know, measuring isn’t the most thrilling part of sewing — but it’s the secret to clothes that love you back.

Grab a soft tape measure and jot down:

  • Full bust / Underbust (for bras)

  • Waist / High hip / Full hip (for bottoms)

  • Rise (front and back) — this one’s a game-changer for leggings

👉 Pro Tip: Measure while wearing your usual workout underlayers. Stretch fabrics mold to your body, so you want the most realistic snapshot.

2. Adjust Your Pattern Before You Cut

This is where the magic happens.

  • If your waistband rolls down: Add height to the rise or choose a firmer elastic.

  • If your bra straps dig in: Lengthen the straps or check that the elastic tension isn’t too tight.

  • If your shorts ride up: Add length to the inseam or consider a grippier hem elastic.

💡 Trace your original pattern and make adjustments on a copy — that way you can go back if needed. Future-you will thank you.

3. The Fit Test: Muslin Isn’t Just for Woven Sewists

Yes, you can make a “fit version” even for knits! Use inexpensive stretch fabric with a similar weight and stretch to your final fabric. Sew it up quickly, try it on, and note what needs tweaking.

Look for:

  • Wrinkles pointing to the problem (wrinkles = too much fabric there)

  • Pull lines (too tight)

  • Waistband position — does it hit where you want it to?

It’s basically detective work with spandex. 🕵️♀️

4. Stretch and Move Test (a.k.a. The Squat Challenge)

Once your final piece is sewn, don’t just admire it in the mirror — move in it.
Do a few squats, reach overhead, jog in place, strike your best yoga pose.

If nothing shifts, pinches, or peeks, congratulations — you nailed it. If something feels off, it’s just another clue for your next version. (Sewing activewear is a journey, not a one-and-done.)

5. Celebrate Your Fit Wins

When you hit that “just right” fit, save your pattern with a note like “Perfect Fit – Do Not Lend to Friends.” Seriously. You’ll want to make ten more versions.
