Make + Master: Upcycle Denim Apron

Turn reclaimed denim into a hardworking apron with plenty of character.
Give old denim a new purpose in this hands-on sewing workshop. You’ll work with reclaimed jeans and denim to create a functional apron while learning how to cut around existing garment details, combine denim pieces and make thoughtful use of pockets, seams and other original features.

No two aprons will be exactly alike. The focus is on creative reuse, practical construction and making something you’ll actually want to wear in the kitchen, studio or workshop.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN + PRACTICE
Through your apron project, you’ll practice:

• Selecting and preparing reclaimed denim for sewing
• Cutting around existing seams, pockets and garment details
• Combining denim pieces into a new design
• Working with multiple layers of heavier fabric
• Constructing and attaching apron ties
• Adding or repurposing pockets
• Topstitching and reinforcing high-use areas
• Finishing edges cleanly
• Making design decisions based on the denim you’re working with

There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, troubleshoot and explore different ways to incorporate the original details of the denim into your finished apron.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN
Part of the fun of upcycling is working with what’s already there.

Depending on the denim you choose, you may be able to incorporate original pockets, seams, waistbands, labels or other details into your apron. Jodie will guide you through adapting the design so your finished piece feels intentional and uniquely yours.

Because every piece of reclaimed denim is different, your apron may vary slightly from the class sample.

IS THIS CLASS FOR YOU?
This workshop is a great fit if you’re comfortable using a sewing machine and want to build your garment-construction skills while exploring upcycling and creative reuse.

You should already be comfortable threading a sewing machine and sewing a basic seam.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jodie Kachkar has been sewing since she was 12 and has spent 25 years teaching with Edmonton Public Schools, including teaching fashion to high school students. She brings an approachable, supportive teaching style to the WORKROOM and loves helping sewists build the skills and confidence to take on projects independently.

GOOD TO KNOW
All denim for this workshop is supplied. We’ll be working with a curated mix of reclaimed and pre-loved denim, so colours, washes and original garment details will vary from piece to piece.

That variation is part of the project—each apron will be a little different and will give existing textiles a useful new life.
