Threads + Techniques: Hoodie Hacks
Small construction changes that give your handmade hoodies a more customized finish.
A hoodie is a great basic—but a few thoughtful details can completely change how it looks, fits and functions.
In this Threads + Techniques workshop, we’ll explore a collection of practical hoodie modifications and finishing techniques that can be incorporated into future sweatshirt, hoodie and knitwear projects.
Rather than sewing a complete garment, you’ll work through a series of focused samples designed to help you understand how each technique is constructed and when you might want to use it.
The exact technique lineup may vary as we refine the workshop, but expect to explore five different hoodie hacks, with a mix of functional details, design modifications and professional finishing ideas.
AT A GLANCE
Date: Friday, Nov 20
Time: 6-9 pm
Skill Level: Beginner
Instructor: Jodie Kachkar
Location: The WORKROOM at Fabric + Flow
Throughout the workshop, we’ll work through five hoodie-focused techniques and modifications.
Techniques may include:
- Adding a thumbhole cuff
- Modifying or customizing a hood
- Creating a split hem
- Alternative cuff, hem or finishing treatments
- Design details that can be incorporated into sweatshirt and hoodie patterns
The final collection of techniques will be selected to give you a useful mix of construction skills and adaptable ideas you can take into future projects.
HOW THE CLASS WORKS
Threads + Techniques classes are designed around skill building rather than completing a full garment.
Your instructor will demonstrate each technique step by step, and you’ll create samples you can keep for reference. Along the way, we’ll talk about how the techniques can be adapted to different patterns, fabrics and garment styles.
You’ll leave with hands-on practice, reference samples and a better understanding of how small pattern and construction changes can make a handmade hoodie feel more intentional and uniquely yours.
IS THIS CLASS FOR YOU?
This workshop is best suited to sewists who are already comfortable using a sewing machine and have some experience sewing garments.
You do not need previous hoodie-making experience, but you should be comfortable sewing seams and following basic garment construction instructions.
