Threads + Techniques: Sewing Swim

Learn the fundamentals of sewing swimwear and build confidence working with stretch performance fabrics.

In this hands-on technique class, you’ll practise the core skills used in swimwear construction, from handling stretchy fabrics and choosing the right stitches to applying swim elastic and creating clean, consistent finishes.

Rather than completing a full garment, you’ll work through guided samples so you can focus on technique, troubleshoot as you go and feel more prepared for your next swimwear project.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN + PRACTICE
Through guided samples, you’ll practice:

• Understanding swimwear fabrics, stretch and recovery
• Choosing the right needles, thread and machine settings
• Sewing highly stretchy fabrics without distorting seams
• Using stretch stitches and zigzag stitches
• Using a serger for swimwear construction
• Working with swimwear elastic
• Applying elastic with consistent tension
• Turning and finishing elastic edges cleanly
• Troubleshooting skipped stitches, wavy seams and uneven elastic

There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, troubleshoot and compare different methods so you understand not just how to sew swimwear, but why certain techniques work better than others.

IS THIS CLASS FOR YOU?
This workshop is a great fit if you’re comfortable using a sewing machine and want to start sewing swimsuits, swim separates or other garments made from swimwear fabrics.

It’s also a helpful refresher if you’ve tried sewing swim before but struggled with elastic, stitching or getting clean, consistent results.

You should already be comfortable threading a sewing machine and sewing a basic seam.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jodie Kachkar has been sewing since she was 12 and has spent 25 years teaching with Edmonton Public Schools, including teaching fashion to high school students. She brings an approachable, supportive teaching style to the WORKROOM and loves helping sewists build the skills and confidence to take on projects independently.

GOOD TO KNOW
This is a technique-based workshop rather than a project class, so you won’t be completing a full swimsuit during the session. Instead, you’ll leave with finished practice samples and a stronger understanding of the methods you can apply to future swimwear projects.
