Threads + Techniques: Sewing with Knits

Build confidence sewing stretch fabrics and learn the techniques that make working with knits easier.

Ready to move beyond woven fabrics? In this hands-on technique workshop, you’ll learn how different knit fabrics behave, how to choose the right stitches and settings, and how to get clean, professional-looking results without stretched seams, skipped stitches or wavy hems.

Rather than completing a full garment, you’ll work through guided samples so you can focus on the techniques and build skills you can use across future knit projects.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN + PRACTICE
Through guided samples, you’ll practice:

• Understanding different types of knit fabrics
• Identifying stretch, recovery and direction of greatest stretch
• Choosing the right needles and thread
• Selecting stitches and adjusting machine settings for knits
• Sewing stretch seams on a regular sewing machine
• Using a serger for knit construction
• Preventing stretched, wavy or puckered seams
• Sewing and attaching knit bands
• Working with ribbing
• Hemming knit fabrics
• Troubleshooting common knit-sewing challenges

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to test techniques on different fabrics, compare results and ask questions along the way.

IS THIS CLASS FOR YOU?
This workshop is a great fit if you’re comfortable using a sewing machine but feel unsure about sewing stretch fabrics—or if you’ve tried knits before and want more consistent results.

The skills covered can be applied to all kinds of everyday knit garments, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, lounge pieces, dresses and more.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Jodie Kachkar has been sewing since she was 12 and has spent 25 years teaching with Edmonton Public Schools, including teaching fashion to high school students. She brings an approachable, supportive teaching style to the WORKROOM and loves helping sewists build the skills and confidence to take on projects independently.

GOOD TO KNOWThis is a technique-based workshop rather than a project class, so you won’t be completing a full garment. Instead, you’ll build a collection of samples while learning how and why different techniques work.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of knit fabrics, practical techniques to reference at home and more confidence choosing and sewing knits for your next project.
